Humour as an artistic strategy

Does meme culture dumb us down or does it strengthen our sense of togetherness? What role does humour play in the self-empowerment of marginalised groups - for example in drag culture? Can animals be funny? Where does humour begin and where does it end? Are we taken seriously, even if we are funny? And should we even take humour seriously?

Humour connects, exposes and questions. It can highlight injustices, reverse power relations and playfully questions social norms. Humour is a method of subversive confrontation with existing structures and at the same time creates moments of collective hilarity and relief - especially in challenging times.

In 2026, the Dogo Residenz für Neue Kunst invites cultural practitioners to explore their humouristic practice or humour as such with courage, sharpness and lightness. Applications are open to cultural practitioners from all disciplines.

Dogo is offering six three-month and three two-month residencies in Lichtensteig (CH) from April to June 2026 and from September to November 2026. In collaboration with the Kunst(Zeug)Haus Rapperswil, there is also the opportunity to present the resulting works to the public from the end of August 2026 to January 2027 and in February 2027 to August 2027 as part of the ‘Seitenwagen’ exhibition series.

Are you interested? Then apply by 31 May 2025!
