On the path up to the Thur Falls in Unterwasser, ‘topochoreographies’, a work by marce norbert hörler, unfolds. Six bronze panels featuring drawings, texts and instructions in the local dialect explore the cycles of nature and invite visitors to rediscover the place with all their senses – through reading aloud together, observing, singing, moving and using their imagination.

You are on your way to the Thur Waterfalls. The path through the Chämmerlitobel was developed by Emil Waldburger in 1927 and leads through a rock gallery up to a viewing platform. The artwork is inspired by the waterfalls and the movements of the water. It draws on natural cycles such as the ebb and flow of the tide or the phases of the moon. Along the path there are six panels featuring drawings and texts in the local dialect. They invite us to explore the site performatively and with all our senses. The drawings and texts are reminiscent of instructions and notations. When we follow them, our perception can shift and the site can be experienced in a different way: through reading aloud together, observing, moving, singing and imagining. Like tarot cards, they open up spaces for interpretation of the stories and gestures that may emerge here. The panels are cast in bronze. Over time, the untreated material reacts to the weather and the surface changes. Just as the water moves, so too do the panels.

marce norbert hörler (b. 1989, CH) lives and works between Berlin and Switzerland. Their work is based on extensive linguistic research, poetic writing and experiments with materials, which take shape in performances, installations, textiles and scents. By staging the voice and other sensory capacities of the body, marce explores systems of knowledge production, practices of meaning-making and technologies of storytelling. Questions of embodiment and the world-forming capacities of sensory perception are central motivations in marce’s practice. Through multisensory spatial and temporal dramaturgies, marce develops queer conceptions of reasoning and the production of meaning. marce’s olfactory practice and research take shape in performances, installations, workshops and lectures.
